Steamed potato and green bean finger food

Finger-length pieces for a baby who is starting to pick things up. Trains hand-mouth coordination.

Published

Around 9 to 10 months a baby develops the pincer grasp and wants to feed themselves. Good finger food is soft enough to squash between two fingers, the length of an adult finger so it is easy to hold, and never round and slippery (choking risk).

Safety: the baby always sits upright and is watched. Coughing and small gags are normal reflexes while learning; the dangerous sign is silence.

Ingredients

  • 1 medium potato
  • a handful of green beans
  • 1 tsp unsalted butter

Steps

  1. 1

Cut the potato into finger-length sticks, trim the beans.

  2. 2

Steam 15 minutes until they squash easily.

  3. 3

Toss with the butter while warm.

  4. 4

Cool to lukewarm and offer 3 to 4 pieces at a time.
