Mackerel and potato soup

A cheap local fish with omega-3 to rival salmon. The broth helps a baby swallow small pieces.

Published

Mackerel is “Indonesia’s salmon”, high in omega-3 at a tenth of the price. Steam then flake carefully; it has many fine bones, so check twice.

Tip: aromatics such as garlic, spring onion and a little ginger are fine; salt and sugar are not needed before 1 year.

Ingredients

  • 40 g mackerel fillet
  • 60 g potato
  • 30 g carrot
  • 1 clove garlic
  • a slice of ginger
  • 1 spring onion
  • 300 ml water
  • 1 tsp coconut oil

Steps

  1. 1

Steam the fish 10 minutes, flake and de-bone.

  2. 2

Sauté garlic and ginger in the oil, add water, potato and carrot, simmer 20 minutes.

  3. 3

Add the fish and spring onion for 3 minutes.

  4. 4

Chop the solids finely and serve in the broth.
